Michelle Obama's Speech at the Democratic National Convention 2008

Did everyone watch the first night of the Democratic National Convention?

A tribute in the form of a documentary honoring our 39th President Jimmy Carter who served from 1979-1981, and won the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize; prominently displayed Carter visiting the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The 39th president made a good point stating that regular people volunteering, is what helped Hurricane Katrina victims -- more than our own government.

If you remember the horrible hurricane tragedy when FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) withheld 85 million dollars worth of supplies for two years!

Eventually, the supplies for Hurricane Katrina victims were given away to other organizations such as day camps, jails, and colleges. FEMA's spokesperson Eric Smith made an appearance to explain how millions of dollars in supplies vanished. In Eric Smiths' words, "No one was asking for supplies, so we gave them away to 14 states."

Mr. Smith refused to acknowledge that FEMA made a huge mistake, so much so, that he commented FEMA "didn't let anyone down in the process."

The victims of Hurricane Katrina needed immediate assistance and they shouldn't have had to ask for anything, because it was obvious that help was needed. Several charities expressed their calls for assistance to FEMA, and was left with nothing but a promise that followed with no action. FEMA didn't lend a helping hand when needed, and treated the residents of New Orleans as if they didn't exist.

Regarding the FEMA incident Jimmy Carter stated, "This is why we need Barack Obama in office, to make sure Hurricane Katrina NEVER HAPPENS AGAIN!"

Carter then commented that, "Democrats are for working people, and the GOP is for the wealthy" and although "The government abandoned their fellow Americans, the communities spirit is great despite their prolonged suffering."

Jesse Jackson Jr., of Illinois, gave a great speech and his words were enticing, which is why the audience appeared blown away by the passion and intensity of his message. Caroline Kennedy spoke and then introduced her uncle Ted Kennedy, whose been extremely ill. Mr. Kennedy walked slowly to the podium and gave a strong and fiery speech, hailing all to uplift the Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama.

The moment everyone had been waiting for had finally arrived!

Michelle Obama was set to take the stage but before she did, a documentary was played which showcased her family and upbringing. The video narrated by Michelle Obama's mother Marian Robinson, was extremely moving. It spoke of the bond Michelle shared with her father and expressed how her dad's strong American values, is something she instills within her own children. Michelle's brother Craig Robinson, walked out on the stage and introduced his sister to the DNC audience.

A fire cracker storm of applause greeted the First Lady in waiting, which seemed to have lasted for about 5 minutes. Her speech was riveting and the crowd was obviously fixated on her, and towards the ending of her speech cameras caught proud Americans wiping the tears from their eyes -- completely moved.

Listening to Michelle's speech displayed a down to earth, real working mom and wife, who loves her children and her husband. She and her husband make a great team because they have a natural passion for wanting to help all people. Michelle and Barack could have stayed at their high paying jobs in corporate America, but their hearts didn't care about the money. So they took lower paying jobs to help those that were in the most need.

At this monumental and historical moment in time Michelle and Barack are truly living the American dream, still with trials and tribulations, but with an understanding of the journey in which they were meant to embark. This will ultimately position them to realize their dream of helping not just Americans, but people all around the world!

When Michelle finished her speech Senator Obama appeared via satellite, and spoke with his wife and the DNC audience. The Obama children Malia 10 and Sasha 7, continuously said I love you's to their father as he spoke, and all he could do was pause, smile, and return the "I love you's" back. You could feel the closeness and strong love that bonds this family together, which further solidifies my support, admiration, and vote, for Barack Hussein Obama!
