Al Sharpton Talks "Gun Appreciation Day" With Larry Ward

Reverend Al Sharpton, host of msnbc's political show Politics Nation, recently had a guest on by the name of Larry Ward; Chairman of Gun Appreciation Day.

The chairman decided to give his view of why this particular day exists to him as he stated

"I believe that gun appreciation day honors the legacy of Dr. King. I think Martin Luther King would agree with me if he were alive today, that if African Americans had been given the right to keep and bare arms from day one of the country's founding, perhaps slavery might not have been a chapter in our history."

This statement was a serious jaw dropper for me, however Reverend Al proceeded to school the young gentleman on Dr. King, guns and slavery

Do you think that "guns" need its own appreciation day? Do you think that "guns" would realize it if they didn't have an appreciation day?

The fact that Mr. Ward, probably ignorant to no fault of his own, truly believes in the freedom of something that recently obliterated the lives of many children in Connecticut, and then commenting that Dr. King would agree with his gun appreciation day -- when MLK was assassinated with a gun is just ridiculous.

Mr. Ward continuously spoke out about the founding fathers and the second amendment, but that doesn't change the fact that when the second amendment was written -- guns with high rounds of ammunition weren't even invented yet, so his validation to bare arms of assault style weaponry weren't even relevant.

Throughout history guns were used to assassinate many of our great leaders that took positive stands for the greater good of all Americans, and although their physical presence was taken from us -- the words that they left behind will never fall silent as the words of our 16th President Abraham Lincoln, the words of our 35th President John F. Kennedy, the words of our Civil Rights Leaders Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Medger Evers, Malcolm X and so forth, speak louder now then ever before.

So Mr. Ward, when you talk about how great guns are and that assassinated leaders like MLK would appreciate your day, just know that King did keep weapons as a way of protecting his family, but the fierce racism and evil on the other side of the barrel is what ultimately claimed the life of our leader, and it's those kind of hands that don't need access to guns.

Happy Birthday Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., your progress is why many of us stand here today. Also, Happy Birthday First Lady Michelle Obama, I appreciate you and your family's sacrifice to our great nation.
