Todd Akin Says Rape Can Be Legitimate

Republican Todd Akin of Missouri (seen above), is running for the United States Senate and he currently serves as a U.S. Congressman on three committees: Armed Services, Science/Technology, and Budget.

Mr. Akin has been under intense scrutiny since he commented on whether rape victims, should be allowed to have an abortion.

“What about in the case of rape?” an interviewer asked Congressman Todd Akin the Republican party’s nominee for Senate in Missouri, in an exchange on abortion. “Should it be legal or not?”

Akin stated, "Well you know, people always want to try to make that as one of those things, well how do you, how do you slice this particularly tough sort of ethical question. First of all, from what I understand from doctors, that’s really rare."

"If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. But let’s assume that maybe that didn’t work or something. I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist and not attacking the child."

Immediately, Americans became outraged at the fact that he felt there was a difference between legitimate rape and illegitimate rape, which there IS no difference; rape is rape, period.

It made me wonder if Mr. Akin were ever involved in a so-called "legitimate rape", because how else would he think that there's a difference between the two?

Republican Presidential nominee Mitt Romney, has called for Todd Akin to resign from his job. I'm sure the former Massachusetts governor doesn't want to be linked to Akin's extreme views but then again, Todd Akin has worked with Vice Presidential hopeful Paul Ryan on key abortion legislation in the past. Ryan and Akin seem to share the same abortion views which means Mitt Romney, could be in election trouble!

However, Mr. Akin has put out a statement that he intends to pursue the Senate seat for this fall. He even put an ad out asking forgiveness while stating that he "misspoke", with regards to the rape question. But the damage has already been done.

Two girls by the name of Bria and Chrissy were so mortified by Todd Akin's comments, that they decided to write and sing a response to his extreme views.
